EU green fuel tax plans welcomed

13 April 2011

Commenting on EU plans to make sure the most polluting fuels which damage our climate are most highly taxed, Friends of the Earth's transport campaigner Richard Dyer said;

"Global climate change is the biggest threat facing the planet - so it makes perfect sense for the fuels that are doing most to wreck our atmosphere to be taxed the heaviest.

"Green taxes will encourage cleaner fuels to become more popular and speed up efforts to slash energy waste.

"The urgent task is to wean the planet off its fossil fuel addiction - this will protect people from yo-yoing fuel prices and create a cleaner, safer future for us all."

Notes to editors:

1. EU plans radical overhaul of fuel taxes:
2. According to Brussels-based campaign group, Transport & Environment: "Raising minimum rates is good for high fuel tax countries like the UK and Germany because they will lose far less revenue to fuel tax havens like Luxembourg that profiteer from the current system by attracting truckers to fill up in huge numbers."
