16 December 2009
Friends of the Earth is supporting the Feeding the 5,000 event which is raising awareness of the levels of food waste in the UK by feeding thousands of people on delicious fresh food that would otherwise have been wasted.
Helen Rimmer, food campaigner for Friends of the Earth, said:
"Food production generates more than a fifth of the UK's climate-changing emissions - the planet simply can't afford to produce food that's destined for the bin.
"Vast areas of vital South American rainforest are being destroyed to grow animal feed to produce meat and dairy that ends up being wasted in UK restaurants and kitchens.
"To prevent runaway climate change, we need a fresh approach to our food, but the Government must act too by ditching its support for damaging factory farming and getting behind planet-friendly farms instead."
