Four new nuclear reactor sites revealed

British Energy announced today that four existing sites have been earmarked for new nuclear reactors. British Energy said Sizewell in Suffolk, Dungeness in Kent, Hinkley in Somerset and Bradwell in Essex were the most likely sites for new reactors.
Friends of the Earth's nuclear campaigner Neil Crumpton said :
"The UK's existing nuclear power stations have already created huge quantities of highly toxic nuclear waste without a long-term solution for its storage or disposal. This dangerous waste will cost UK taxpayers many billions of pounds to safeguard, and will remain a major threat for many generations to come. Furthermore, the new reactor designs are all untested prototypes, and the shortage of skills and component availability to build new stations would seriously compromise speedy or safe deployment."
"It's crazy to build a new generation of reactors that will create even more radioactive waste and be a major terrorist target when we can meet our power needs, maintain energy security and tackle climate change through a comprehensive programme of renewables, energy efficiency and cleaner carbon technology. It's time to invest in a safe, clean and sustainable future."
