Friends of the Earth endorses UCU calls for green curricula

10 August 2007

Friends of the Earth has supported calls from the University and College Union (UCU) for more environmental education in the college curriculum. UCU plans are in response to the results of a survey by the Association of Colleges (AoC) which revealed that 88% of colleges believe sustainability should feature in all curriculum areas. In a related report, the AoC also highlighted the growth and variety of environment related courses.

UCU, which represents lecturers in colleges and universities, and researchers and academic related staff in universities, welcomed the findings and said it would be seeking ways of working with colleges and universities to promote greater understanding of environmental concerns such as climate change.

Friends of the Earth spokesperson, Jo Walker says:

"We wholeheartedly welcome UCU's call for greener curricula. There's mounting evidence that students are keen to learn more about how they can tackle climate change. A survey commissioned by Friends of the Earth earlier this year showed that students feel that not enough is being done to combat climate change. The majority of students think that climate change should be the Government's biggest priority, ahead of terrorism, the war in Iraq, HIV and student loans."

"Climate change is the biggest threat the planet faces. But the solutions to tackle it, such as alternative energy sources and energy efficient technologies, already exist, and there is still time to act. It's encouraging that so many students recognise the importance of tackling climate change. They have a crucial role to play in ensuring that we move towards a low-carbon economy."
