10 April 2003
Friends of the Earth today welcomed news that Concorde would be withdrawn from service later this year. The pollution from supersonic flights causes five times as much global warming as that from equivalent subsonic flights because supersonic planes fly higher and use two to three times more fuel per passenger mile.
Friends of the Earth's Transport Campaigner Roger Higman said:
"Concorde is a massive polluter. It's a dinosaur which rightly belongs in a museum. We are delighted that it is being withdrawn from service. The aviation industry should learn from its demise and invest in aircraft that are quieter, less polluting and use less fuel per passenger mile."
