Fossil fuel alternatives essential to tackle soaring fuel bills
6 October 2011
The UK must invest in clean green energy and cut energy waste to tackle rising fuel bills, Friends of the Earth said today (Thursday 6 October 2011) in response to a uSwitch survey on household energy bills.
Friends of the Earth's Policy and Campaigns Director Craig Bennett said:
"Consumers are being misled about the causes of energy bill increases - the main reason they are rocketing is because the Big Six energy companies have us hooked on ever more expensive imports of gas, coal and oil.
"Cutting the energy we waste and developing clean British energy offers the best hope of an end to nightmare price hikes.
"Our heat leaking homes mean that more people die in the winter in the UK than in much colder countries - vulnerable households need urgent help to insulate their homes and cut their bills.
"If we don't fix our broken energy system, families across the nation will continue to pay a hefty price - the Government must stand up to the Big Six to fight for energy we can all afford."
