Gordon Brown Speech

Responding to Gordon Brown's announcement on the Climate Change Bill in his speech to the Labour Party Conference today, Tony Juniper, Friends of the Earths Executive Director said:

"We are delighted that the Prime Minister has recognised the need to bring the Governments Climate Change Bill into line with the latest science. The Bill is a ground breaking piece of legislation however it needs to be strengthened if it is to deliver the cuts in emissions which scientists say are needed.

The Government must now ensure that the Billcommits the UK to cutting its emissions by at least 3 percent year on year. It is also essential that all emissions - including those from international aviation and shipping - are included in the Bill. This is something Friends of the Earth has been campaigning for through The Big Ask, our climate campaign.

The Prime Minister is right to point out the benefits of tackling climate change for UK jobs and the economy. By introducing a strong climate change law the Government will put UK businesses in a strong position to capitalise on the global shift to a low carbon future.

We also welcome Mr Brown's emphasis on action at a UK level. Putting our own house in order will give us the credibility we need to push for greater action at an international level.

Friends of the Earth launched The Big Ask, its campaign for a strong Climate Change Law in May 2005. The organisation is calling for the Bill to:

Ensure that UK carbon dioxide emissions are cut by an average of at least three per cent every year (equivalent to at least 80 percent by 2050);

Include international aviation & shipping emissions;

Establish a tough independent body to set future targets and demand action when targets slip;

Require an annual progress report to Parliament, with a debate, led by the Prime Minister.
