Government must intervene over mail train cut

6 June 2003

Commenting on the Royal Mail's decision to end the transport of post by rail, Friends of the Earth's Transport Campaigner Tony Bosworth said:

"Scrapping mail trains is completely contrary to Government policy of increasing the amount of freight that travels by rail. The Government must intervene, and persuade the state-owned Royal Mail to reverse this damaging decision. If it goes ahead it could lead to more lorries, more congestion and more pollution.

"But the Royal Mail's concerns about the cost and reliability of using the railway will no doubt ring true with many train passengers. This should be a wake-up call to the Government to sort out the mess on Britain's railways".
