Government Publishes Planning Policy Statement on Climate Change

Friends of the Earth welcomed the publication of the Government's first Planning Policy Statement on Climate Change today (17 December). The statement provides guidance for local authority planners on the role they need to play in tackling climate change.

Friends of the Earth Planning Advisor, Hugh Ellis said:

"The statement outlines the important role which local authorities must play in the fight against climate change. There are notable gaps but it is a step in the right direction. We particularly welcome the emphasis the Government has placed on harnessing local community enthusiasm for finding practical solutions to climate change. Now it is up to local authorities to act. They must insist on the highest environmental standards for new developments and do everything they can to promote renewable energy."
