Press Release

GREEN LIGHT FOR MASSIVE HOUSE BUILDING SLAMMED

Nov 5 2004

Today's vote by the East of England Regional Assembly in favour of allowing nearly half a million new homes to be built in the region have been slammed by Friends of the Earth.

The Assembly gave the green light to the massive building plans despite expert advice warning of enormous and irreversible damage to the region's environment and the quality of life of its people [1].

Friends of the Earth's Regional Campaigner Mary Edwards said:

"This appalling decision will have a devastating effect on the region. It will cause enormous damage to wildlife, heritage, local peoples' quality of life and natural resources across the six counties. The East of England has been badly let down by national and regional politicians, but the fight to stop these ludicrous plans will continue."

Friends of the earth is urging individuals and organisations across the region to take part in the upcoming Public Consultation (Dec. 8th to March 16th) and demand a complete rethink of these proposals and tell the government that the region's people and its environment must be put before the Treasury's obsession with economic growth at all costs.
