Green light for new Essex port slammed

29 March 2006

Today's decision to give the go-ahead to a new deep sea container port at Bathside Bay in Essex has been greeted with dismay by Friends of the Earth.

Friends of the Earth Ports Campaigner Mary Edwards said:

"Once again the Government has put business interests over the protection of the environment.

This port development will have a huge impact. It will damage a protected and internationally important habitat, cause a huge increase in road traffic and increase local pollution. Any port development should have taken place at Felixstowe South not Bathside Bay."

Bathside Bay is an internationally important protected area containing the habitats for many species including the black-tailed godwit, redshank, grey and ringed plovers. The area is internationally recognised as a key feeding and over-wintering site for these birds.

Friends of the Earth opposes the port development because of the impact it will have on

  • the environment and wildlife

  • the communities that live by the bay

  • local and regional transport network.
