Press release
Fossil fuels not green taxes are driving hikes in fuel bills
5 September 2011
Commenting on news today that a senior Government adviser has warned that green policies could increase household fuel bills by £300 per year, Friends of the Earth's Head of Policy and Campaigns Craig Bennett said:
"It's our dependence on increasingly costly fossil fuels, our heat-leaking homes, and the domination of the energy market by the 'Big Six' companies that are driving household fuel bills skyward.
"We need to replace our ageing power stations anyway, but only by investing in green energy and slashing energy waste will we keep the lights on and cut fuel bills long term.
"The Government should distance itself from oil company advice and focus on developing the clean fuels of the future - as well as ensuring that landlords properly insulate rented homes and incentivising homeowners to do the same."
