Funding boost for green local transport welcomed
19 January 2011
Welcoming the £560million fund to encourage local councils to "go green" on transport, Friends of the Earth's Transport Campaigner Richard Dyer said:
"We warmly welcome the Local Sustainable Transport Fund. It is something that we campaigned for and is something that we believe will help.
"Local councils need to cut emissions in their areas and this must include action on transport, encouraging greener alternatives such as walking, cycling, car-sharing and affordable public transport. This is especially true after the recent rises in the cost of petrol.
"We also need the Government to introduce Local Carbon Budgets in the Energy Bill so that all councils take action rather than just the greenest ones."
