Report reveals health benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions
25 November 2009
Commenting on 'The Lancet Series on Health and Climate Change: Public health benefits of strategies to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions' published today, Friends of the Earth's Head of Climate Change, Mike Childs, said:
"We already know that cutting carbon emissions through backing renewables and investing in energy efficiency will increase fuel security, create new jobs and strengthen our economy - this new research reveals that it will also reduce heart disease, strokes, cancers and depression.
"Lower meat diets in the west will deliver a win-win for our health and the health of the planet. We must support farmers to switch from carbon-intensive production methods to low-carbon planet-friendly farming.
"Fighting climate change can be a good news story - we need to see a strong and fair climate change agreement at the upcoming Copenhagen talks to make this a reality."
