Heathrow expansion may be delayed again

13 January 2009

Commenting on speculation that a Government decision on Heathrow expansion has been delayed again because of growing concerns about its environmental impact, Friends of the Earth's executive director Andy Atkins said:

"It's little surprise that Government plans to expand Heathrow have generated such intense political and public opposition. It would have a terrible impact on local people, seriously threaten UK targets for tackling climate change and undermine the UK's environmental reputation on the international stage."

"If the decision has been delayed again it will raise hopes that the Government may be waking up to the disastrous consequences of allowing a new runway to be built."

"It's time to put the long-term safety of people and the planet ahead of the short term interests of the aviation industry."
