Network Rail announces plans for high-speed rail
26 August 2009
Commenting on Network Rail today outlining its preferred route for a London to Scotland high-speed rail line, Friends of the Earth's Executive Director Andy Atkins said:
"A fast and efficient electric high speed rail system powered by renewable energy could provide a low-carbon alternative to short haul flights and cars and play a major part in the development of a green transport system.
"But the environmental impact of building new rail lines must be properly assessed to minimise the impact on the countryside and local people - and demonstrate it will lead to an overall cut in carbon emissions from transport.
"Ministers must also consider reopening disused rail lines and stations and increasing the capacity and speed of existing tracks.
"And money must be earmarked to green cars, improve existing rail and bus services, and provide better facilities for cycling and walking."
