HOWARD CRITICISED OVER FUEL PROTEST SUPPORT

Jun 2 2004

Friends of the Earth today hit out at Michael Howard after he indicated that he may support protests over petrol prices.

Friends of the Earth's transport campaigner Tony Bosworth said:

"Michael Howard's comments shows that he is more interested in jumping on populist bandwagons than addressing the real energy crisis - global climate change. Fears about rising oil prices demonstrate the need for a massive investment in energy efficiency and alternatives to oil, such as bio fuels. Burning oil is a major contributor to global climate change. Politicians from all parties must realise that reducing our dependence on it would make both economic and environmental sense."
