Prince of Wales' fish protection plan welcomed
Commenting on a new initiative by the Prince of Wales to protect the oceans from over-fishing, Craig Bennett, Friends of the Earth’s Director of Policy & Campaigns, said:
"The Prince of Wales's global initiative for more sustainable fishing practices is much-needed - the oceans can be a source of wealth, jobs and food security for long into the future, if only we can use them intelligently.
“The Prince’s initiative has shown how good practice is already widespread and how there are huge opportunities for scaling this up across the world.
“If we succeeded in replicating the positive examples which are already out there then that could lead to bigger catches, less waste, more secure jobs, more food and a more secure and stable fishing industry.
“Business as usual will lead to collapsing fish stocks, higher prices in the shops and spell the demise of an industry that could otherwise have a very bright future.
“It’s fair to say that the cod has not necessarily had its chips, if only we can muster the will to do what is so clearly possible.”
