Industry and commerce cut waste and recycle more - new figures

Commenting on the results of a survey published by Defra today (Thursday 16 December), which show that total commercial and industrial (C&I) waste in England has fallen and recycling has increased, Friends of the Earth's Resource Use Campaigner Julian Kirby said:
"These results show that the industrial and commercial sectors have dramatically reduced waste and are recycling more.
"In fact many companies are forging ahead with their own plans to cut waste - but they need the Government's support to go further and faster.
"If the Coalition is serious about creating a 'zero waste society' it must work alongside businesses and councils to develop better product design, share best practice on recycling, and stop building polluting and expensive incinerators that we don't even need."

- Defra's 'Survey of Commercial and Industrial Waste Arisings 2010 - Final Results' shows that total commercial and industrial (C&I) waste generation in England, in 2009, is estimated to be 48.0 million tonnes. This is a decrease of 29 per cent from 67.9 million tonnes since the last national survey of business waste in 2002/3.
