Lobbying Bill: Lords urged to stand up for democracy again
The House of Lords was urged today (Wednesday 22 January 2014) to stand up for democracy once again after MPs, backed by the Government, voted to overturn crucial changes to the Lobbying Bill at its Third Reading.
Friends of the Earth Senior Political Campaigner Liz Hutchins said:
“The Government comprehensively lost the arguments today but won the vote.
“This poorly conceived Lobbying Bill will severely restrict charities and campaigning groups from speaking out on behalf of their supporters ahead of elections.
“Peers must once again stand up for democracy when the bill returns to the House of Lords.”
