Local residents and Friends of the Earth support Mansfield wind farm proposal
23 July 2007
Friends of the Earth joined local residents in support of the Lindhurst wind farm today. They have launched a new website that enables local people to write to the Newark and Sherwood District Council in support of the proposal. The environmental group expressed concern that two local MPs have publicly objected to the Lindhurst wind farm when wind power is a key part of Government plans to cut carbon dioxide emissions and tackle climate change.
Regional Campaigner Callie Lister said:
"The East Midlands faced chaos last month after the worst flooding in living memory devastated large areas. Extreme weather events like this are set to increase if we don't tackle climate change now. The UK is the windiest country in Europe - we should make the most of wind power to supply clean electricity."
The new wind farm to the south of Mansfield would generate enough carbon-free electricity for 5,000 homes. However, local MPs Alan Meale & Paddy Tipping have come out against the building, sparking debate amongst residents about the willingness of local decision makers take action on climate change.
Local resident and co-ordinator of West Notts Friends of the Earth, Mary Button said
"If we continue to burn fossil fuels to generate power we will damage our fragile world beyond repair. The proposed wind farm would represent a major contribution by Mansfield to tackling climate change - the biggest threat facing humanity. I urge everyone who is concerned about climate change to support these proposals."
Newark and Sherwood Council will soon be making a decision on the proposed Lindhurst wind farm.
Local residents can prevent further delays to clean and green local solutions by registering their support for the Lindhurst wind farm at: http://www.foe.co.uk/campaigns/climate/press_for_change/lindhurst_windfarm/index.html
