London array wind farm supported by friends of the earth
7 June 2005
Plans to build a massive off-shore wind farm that could meet the electricity needs of a quarter of London's households are being supported by Friends of the Earth.
The 1.3bn London Array wind farm, would be sited 20 kilometres offshore in the Greater Thames Estuary, and cover 245 square kilometres. It would also have a 1,000MW capacity - enough to meet ten per cent of the Government's 2010 renewables target.
Friends of the Earth's director Tony Juniper said:
"Climate change is the biggest threat the planet faces. Projects like the London Array wind-farm are exactly the sort of development that is urgently required to tacklethe problem, and help meet UK Government targets for reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Renewable energy has a huge potential, and this development would be a significant move toward a cleaner and greener future."
Note
1. CORE Limited, E.ON UK Renewables and Shell WindEnergy Limited have today announced that their consortium, London Array Limited has submitted consents and planning applications for the London Array offshore wind farm project.
