London faces prosecution over dirty air

3 June 2010

Commenting on London's illegal breach of EU air quality standards, which the UK was warned about by the European Commission today, Friends of the Earth's London Campaigner, Jenny Bates said:

"Boris Johnson must introduce tougher measures to ensure that London meets EU air pollution limits, rather than relying so heavily on the Government to act.

"The Mayor must abandon all plans that would make traffic, air pollution and climate change worse - these currently include removing the Western Extension to the Congestion Charge, dropping traffic reduction targets, proposing more river crossings for vehicles and supporting a 50 per cent increase in flights from City airport.

"By making London a safer place to walk and cycle and improving public transport, the Mayor could get people out of cars and ensure cleaner air for everyone who lives, works in or visits the capital."
