M6 toll: Government surrenders to roads lobby

6 July 2004

Friends of the Earth has reacted with anger to today's Government announce of plans to build a new toll motorway alongside the existing M6 between Manchester and Birmingham.

Friends of the Earth's transport campaigner Tony Bosworth said:

"This is a terrible day for the environment. Ministers have admitted that building roads will not solve the problem of congestion. But rather than fighting for sustainable solutions, they have hoisted the white flag to the roads lobby.

Coming on the day that the Prime Minister described climate change as the single biggest problem facing the world, this announcement casts further doubt on whether the Government's climate change policy is action or simply hot air

Toll motorways do nothing to address the problem of congestion in our towns and cities. This is where the majority of journeys start and finish and where high quality public transport can offer real alternatives to the car.

Mr Darling talks of giving motorists a choice. But real choice is providing alternatives to the car by investing more in public transport. That's what the Government should be prioritising."
