Press Release

MINISTER JUMPS GUN ON GHOST SHIPS DISPOSAL

Apr 22 2004

Responding to Environment Minister Elliot Morley's statement in the House of Commons today, Friends of the Earth Campaigns Director Mike Childs said:

"Elliot Morley is jumping the gun in saying the four ghost ships should be scrapped in Hartlepool when he knows that risk assessments into the best environmental option for dealing with these ships have yet to be completed. His statement undermines confidence in the assessment process.

"This whole ghost fleet fiasco is the result of decisions being made without proper information. Friends of the Earth wants the best environmental option to be found for these ships. We also want the other nine US ships which are marked for export to the UK to be scrapped in the USA because the environmental risk will undoubtedly be lower. America has the moral obligation, the skills and the capacity to do so."
