Ministers 'too slow' over flooding

Commenting on a report published today (Friday 1 February) by the Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs committee accusing the Government of being 'too slow' in bring in flooding safety measures, Friends of the Earth Nature Campaigner Paul De Zylva said:

"Flooding is always a Cinderella issue with our politicians - it's a priority when  communities are hit and is dropped when the waters recede.

"The Environment Agency is doing a good job to hold back the tide but is not properly resourced. It's also under pressure from developers, councils and the Government itself to exert influence over development, which can often worsen flood risk.

"Scientists have predicted that climate change will trigger more frequent floods in the future - the devastation caused by flooding in recent years must jump-start the need for urgent action."
