MPs' call for action on food must not be ignored

13 May 2012

Welcoming the publication of a new report by a committee of MPs today (Sunday 13 May 2012) on sustainable food, Friends of the Earth's Senior Food Campaigner Vicki Hird said:

"This report draws up a menu for change which the Government must accept.

"At a time when people are going hungry and diet-related diseases are on the increase, Ministers must ensure food is produced and used in a way that protects our health and our environment.

"The Government must heed the committee's call for a joined-up food strategy - not the current incoherent and piecemeal approach which aims to boost production at all costs.

"Action is needed to ensure healthy food with a lower environmental footprint is served up in schools and hospitals - including less but better meat and dairy products."
