MPs back airport expansion

17 July 2003

A Committee of MP's today called for existing airports to be expanded rather than building new ones.

Responding to the Transport Committee report, Friends of the Earth's aviation campaigner Paul de Zylva said:

"The reason there is so much demand for air travel is because it is so cheap. The aviation industry gets huge public subsidies and doesn't pay for the enormous damage it causes to local communities and the environment. Recent Government figures show that if the industry did pay its way, demand would fall and the need for new runways would disappear. Our politicians must realise that, as with roads, we cannot build our way out of the problem."
