MPs renew attack on government aviation policies

23 September 2004

A powerful committee of MPs today renewed its attack on the Government's unsustainable aviation policy and its impacts on global climate change.

An Environmental Audit Committee report, published today, makes it clear that there are fundamental and apparently irreconcilable differences between its view and that of the Department for Transport. Its chair, Peter Ainsworth MP said: "There is clearly a glaring inconsistency in the DfT promoting so large a growth in carbon emissions from aviation at a time when we need to make huge cuts to minimise the worst impacts of global warming."

Commenting on the report, Friends of the Earth's aviation campaigner Richard Dyer said:

"The Government has its head in the clouds when it comes to aviation policy. Tony Blair admits that climate change is the world's greatest environmental challenge. Yet his Government is allowing a massive expansion of the aviation industry which threatens to nullify attempts to reduce our emissions of climate-changing carbon dioxide. The Government must take steps to cut the projected growth in air travel and make the industry pay for the enormous damage it causes."
