Action not words needed to protect nature
Commenting on the launch of DEFRA's discussion document 'An invitation to shape the Nature of England', which asks everyone from birdwatchers to businesses to submit their views on protecting and enhancing the natural environment, Friends of the Earth's senior food campaigner Vicki Hird said:
"It's important to get people talking about ways to protect the natural environment - but Ministers know it's already high time for action, not just words.
"This discussion document acknowledges that damage to water, soils, forests and habitats abroad is costing billions by trashing the natural resources we rely on, but it fails to mention Britain's role finding a solution.
"If the coalition is to keep its pledge of being the greenest Government ever it must set out how it will halt and amend the destruction of wildlife and habitats at home and abroad while planning to downsize Natural England and other key agencies.
"Defra must help protect rainforests by supporting the UK to switch to planet- friendly farming and better use of public transport - instead of importing soy to feed our farm animals and biofuels to feed our cars."
