New climate campaign partnership between The Co-operative Bank and Friends of the Earth
5 December 2005
The Co-operative Bank and Friends of the Earth today announced that they will be working in partnership throughout 2006 on a joint climate change campaign.
The Bank has a long history of campaigning on issues relating to its Ethical Policy, and has joined forces with Friends of the Earth to launch its new campaign ‘Combating Climate Change’. The Bank and Friends of the Earth will work together on a range of new projects, communications and awareness raising activities. The Bank is also backing Friends of the Earth’s climate campaign ‘The Big Ask’, calling for a new law so that the Government reduces carbon dioxide emissions by three per cent every year.
Kate Daley, Campaigns Manager at The Co-operative Bank said:
“At The Co-operative Bank we take climate change very seriously, because our customers do. Which is why, since 1998, the Bank has refused to invest in business involved in fossil fuels: why we support renewable energy and why we are launching this year-long campaign with Friends of the Earth to help combat climate change.”
Friends of the Earth’s Head of Campaigns, Mike Childs, said:
“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with The Co-operative Bank to combat climate change, as it is the biggest environmental challenge we face. We look forward to developing and delivering important research and communication projects to help the UK develop a sustainable low carbon economy."
“The Big Ask is now supported by a large number of environment, development and social groups, as well as businesses involved in sustainable energy solutions.”
Notes
The Big Ask campaign, launched by Friends of the Earth, challenges the Government to bring in a new climate change law, the Climate Change Bill. The law would force the Government to take responsibility for the UK 's contribution to global warming by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by three per cent every year. The Bill is supported by over 300 MPs. www.thebigask.com/
