New Government travel statistics published
22 April 2004
Commenting on new Government travel habit statistics [1] published today, Friends of the Earth's transport campaigner Tony Bosworth said:
"These latest figures show we are driving ten per cent further than a decade ago, and not travelling as far by bus, bike or on foot. This is causing huge problems for people, local communities and the environment and shows why we urgently need changes to Government transport policy.
"It's particularly worrying that many more children are being driven to school and fewer are walking than a decade ago. Safe routes to school would make it possible for children to walk or cycle to classes safely and help cut congestion at peak times. The Government could provide a safe route to school for every child in England for £1 billion over the next 6 years, a tiny fraction of the current £180 billion transport plan spending."
The Government has a golden opportunity to change direction when it revises its 10 year transport plan this summer. The Way to Go campaign [2] has published a manifesto of tried-and-tested policies which will help sort out the transport crisis.
