Support for Nottingham's Workplace Parking Levy

24 September 2009

Friends of the Earth today supported Nottingham City Council's proposed new Workplace Parking Levy which would fund improvements to local public transport.

Friends of the Earth's East Midlands Regional Campaigns Coordinator Callie Lister said:

"The City Council is spot on to back this innovative way to fund investment in Nottingham's public transport - this is exactly the kind of move councils need to be making to cut carbon emissions in their area.

"The proposed package of public transport investment will take 2.5 million cars off our roads by 2015 - a big step in the fight against climate change.

"Fewer traffic jams clogging the roads will boost local businesses, and better buses, trains and trams will give people in Greater Nottingham much greater access to education, healthcare and leisure facilities.

"Friends of the Earth's Get Serious About CO2 campaign is calling for councils to commit to cutting carbon dioxide emissions in the local area by at least 40 per cent by 2020 - and the Workplace Parking Levy would be an excellent way for Nottingham to fund serious carbon cuts."
