npower fined for consumer complaints mishandling

31 October 2011

Commenting on the news today [Monday 31 October 2011] that npower - one of the big six energy companies - has been fined £2 million by energy regulator Ofgem for mishandling consumer complaints, Friends of the Earth energy campaigner Donna Hume said:

"This fine is yet another example of how consumers around the country are suffering at the hands of the big energy companies.

"It's a national scandal that the Big Six are raking in massive profits from expensive dirty fuels while people shiver in their homes and struggle to pay their bills.

"Just today the Government has cut support for people reducing their bills by producing their own clean energy when it should be getting tough on the energy companies.

"We urgently need the Government to launch a full public inquiry into the behaviour and influence of the energy companies and help for people to reduce their bills - it's time for David Cameron to fight for clean energy we can all afford."
