Nuclear chief quits

3 February 2003

Norman Askew, Chief Executive of British Nuclear Fuels today announced that he will step down as Chief Executive this summer.

Friends of the Earth's Nuclear Campaigner Bryony Worthington said:

"The timing of this decision is very telling. Key questions about whether the Government will seek to replace existing nuclear capacity in its Energy White Paper, and the future of BNFL's key customer British Energy, are just weeks away from being resolved. Both will have a significant impact on BNFL's future. For Mr Askew to leave now suggests that he may be taking his ball home in a fit of pique because things aren't going BNFL's way."

"The new Chief Executive must be someone who realises that the commercial future of BNFL lies in cleaning up the radioactive mess of the last 50 years and not in creating more by building new nuclear power plants."
