Obama's speech on climate is a disappointment

22 September 2009

Commenting on President Obama's climate change speech today, Friends of the Earth's senior international climate campaigner Asad Rehman said:

"Barack Obama's speech was deeply disappointing - it was a huge missed opportunity which does nothing to break the logjam in international climate negotiations.

"The President clearly recognises the urgent need to slash emissions, but the US must take responsibility for its role in polluting the atmosphere and take genuine steps to ensure a clean, safe and secure future for us all.

"This means agreeing to cut US emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2020, abandoning false solutions such as carbon offsetting and insisting that rich nations provide sufficient funds to allow poor countries to develop cleanly and adapt to the impacts of global warming.

"It's time for the President to say 'yes we can' to the growing calls for US leadership on this crucial issue."
