Osborne’s Budget pledge to drill “every last drop” of North Sea oil and gas is foolhardy
Reacting to the Treasury’s announcement today (Friday 21 March 2014) that new tax breaks for the North Sea oil and gas sector will create 700 new jobs, Friends of the Earth Economics Campaigner David Powell, said:
“Filthy rich fossil fuel companies lobbied the Chancellor for a massive tax break and, to no-one’s surprise, got one.
“Mr Osborne’s Budget pledge to drill “every last drop” of North Sea oil and gas is foolhardy and completely out of kilter with the urgency of climate change.
“Investing in the UK’s huge renewable energy potential would create tens of thousands of new jobs.
“It’s hardly surprising that would-be investors in a future-proof clean energy system are whirling in confusion – the Chancellor has to stop his dangerous fossil fuel crusade.”
