Pickles extends wind farm appeal crackdown
Communities and Local Government Secretary, Eric Pickles, has confirmed today (Thursday 10 April 2014) that he will continue to ‘pull in’ decisions on renewable energy projects for a further 12 months. This will enable him to take the final decision on whether or not to allow onshore windfarms in England to go ahead.
Friends of the Earth Renewable Energy Campaigner Alasdair Cameron commented:
“It’s ironic that someone who describes himself as the champion of localism is taking control away from communities, and blocking a popular and cheap form of clean power.
“Blocking onshore windfarms, the cheapest form of renewable power, will push up energy bills – and plays right into the hands of the Big Six energy firms.
“Rather than tilting at wind turbines, Minsters should be looking at ways to increase community ownership of wind power and help wean the nation off increasingly costly fossil fuels.”
