Power firm opens up to energy market
12 October 2011
Responding to news today (Wednesday 12 October 2011) that energy company SSE is planning to auction its power on the open market, Friends of the Earth's executive director Andy Atkins said:
"SSE's move is an important step towards allowing more suppliers into the energy market - which will give people more choice and reduce the power of the 'Big Six' over how we fuel our homes and businesses.
"But companies like SSE must move away from expensive imported gas and coal if they are serious about protecting people from rocketing fuel bills - and invest instead in renewable power and cutting energy waste.
"Ministers must also stand up to the Big Six and help new British firms enter the market to provide clean, home-grown energy we can all afford."
