Prince Charles climate call shows he is a man of the people
27 October 2005
Prince Charles has shown that he is a man of the people by reflecting public opinion and saying that climate change is the greatest challenge facing man and that not enough is being done about it.
Commenting on Prince Charles' interview with the BBC Friends of the Earth Director Tony Juniper said:
Prince Charles is right in saying that not enough is being done about climate change and is reflecting the opinion of the majority of the British public. Carbon Dioxide emissions have risen since Labour came to power and a poll by Friends of the Earth this summer showed 73% of people believe the Government is not doing enough to tackle climate change.
Friends of the Earth's climate campaign The Big Ask includes a call for the Government to bring in the Climate Change Bill which would oblige the UK Government to commit to year on year reductions to deal with climate change.
Notes
The Big Ask campaign, launched by Friends of the Earth in May 2005, includes a challenge to the Government to bring in a new climate change law. The law would force the Government to take responsibility for the UK's contribution to global warming by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by three per cent every year.

The Big Ask campaign is backed by a report by Friends of the Earth which shows how the Government can meet carbon dioxide reduction targets without nuclear power. Carbon dioxide emissions have risen under Labour.
The new law would force the Government to cut emissions of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, by three per cent every year. This would make it easier and more affordable for the UK to meet its target of cutting 1990 carbon dioxide levels by 60 per cent by 2050, and avoid the need for more expensive and drastic action in the future.
