Rail fare increases slammed

19 June 2003

Commenting on news that rail customers are to be subjected to above-inflation fares rises, Friends of the Earth's transport campaigner Richard Dyer said:

"This is bad news for rail passengers and the environment. Under Labour motoring costs have fallen while bus and train fares have gone up. Above-inflation rail fare increases for commuters are likely to encourage more cars onto our already congested roads. The Government must sort out this transport mess. Urgent action is needed to get people out of their cars and onto cost-effective and reliable alternatives."
