Richmond parking charge scheme welcomed
30 January 2007
Friends of the Earth has welcomed Richmond Council's decision to increase parking permit charges for gas-guzzling vehicles, and called on other councils to follow suit. The green group also urged the Chancellor to take action to promote the use of fuel-efficient cars in his next Budget.
Friends of the Earth's transport campaigner, Tony Bosworth said:
"We are delighted that Richmond Council is taking steps to tackle climate change by encouraging motorists in the borough to drive greener cars. We hope more local authorities will now adopt similar policies".
"Road transport is responsible for around a quarter of UK carbon dioxide emissions. There must be a concerted effort to tackle it, including persuading drivers to buy more fuel-efficient cars. But the real power lies with the Chancellor, who must increase road tax for gas-guzzling vehicles, and cut it for fuel-efficient models in his next Budget".
"International action is also needed. The EU must set tough mandatory fuel-efficiency standards for new cars to help ensure that this sector plays its part in tackling climate change."
Friends of the Earth is also calling on the British Government to play a leading role in tackling climate change by ensuring that its proposed new law on climate change cuts UK carbon dioxide emissions by at least three per cent every year.
