Russian Govt working with anti-fracking groups, says NATO chief

Commenting on claims by the Secretary-general of NATO today (Thursday 19 June 2014)  that Russia is secretly working with environmental groups campaigning against fracking in an attempt to maintain Europe's dependence on energy imports from Moscow, Friends of the Earth’s Head of Campaigns Andrew Pendleton said;

“We’ve consistently urged the Government to end our dependence on dirty fossil fuels from abroad by developing Britain’s home-grown renewable energy.

“Perhaps the Russians are worried about our huge wind and solar potential, and have infiltrated the UK Government.”

Notes to editors:

1.     Energy efficiency would also play a key role in reducing energy imports. According to the European Commission a 2030 target to cut energy use by 28%  would reduce gas imports by just 16% compared to 2010 levels, while a 40% target would reduce imports by 40%.
