Russian cabinet backs kyoto

30 September 2004

Friends of the Earth has welcomed today's Russian Cabinet approval of the Kyoto protocol. The treaty will now pass to the Kremlin-dominated Parliament for final ratification.

Under the treaty industrialised nations responsible for 55 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions must ratify the protocol before it can come into effect. If Russia ratifies the treaty it will reach this key threshold.

Friends of the Earth's climate campaigner Bryony Worthington said:

"If Russia ratifies Kyoto it will be a significant step forward in the fight against global warming. It will also turn up the heat on The US and Australia who have refused to join international efforts to avoid a global catastrophe. Time is running out. We need urgent international action now."
