Schools compete for wind power
23 June 2006
Schools and youth groups could win a wind turbine worth over £1500 in Friends of the Earths `Shout about climate solutions 2006' competition, launched today (23 June 2006). The competition is open to schools and youth groups taking part in the organisations `Shout about climate solutions' week from November 6 - 10 2006.
`Shout about climate solutions' week is an annual nation-wide week of activity to raise awareness and encourage action on climate change. Pupils taking part in the competition will be asked to investigate what individuals or organisations in their communities are doing to tackle climate change. They will record the achievements of community climate heroes through film, photography, audio or the written word.
The turbine, donated by Windsave Ltd will be fitted to the winning school or youth group and could generate approx 1MWhr of energy per year and save up to 163 hot air balloons of carbon dioxide emissions.
Windsave Sales Manager Anya Gordon said:
"We are delighted to be involved in Friends of the Earth's Shout about climate solutions week. It will be great for children to see the wind turbine at work - providing energy for school or youth club and saving on their energy bills whilst reducing carbon dioxide emissions"
Friends of the Earth has also produced a Shout about climate solutions resource pack for teachers, youth workers and young people who are keen to know more about climate change and what can be done to address it.
The resource, designed for use with young people between the ages of 11 and 13, contains easy to use information on climate change and how we can tackle it through a focus on electricity, transport and heating. It is also packed with activities designed to bring the issue to life in the classroom including a PR campaign activity, resources to enable students design an energy efficient house or exploring how the school can be more energy efficient.
The Shout about climate solutions resource is linked to the National Curriculum in the areas of science, CDT, mathematics, geography and citizenship. It will also help schools and teachers who are being asked by Government to measure and cut their energy use and involve young people in creating policies and actions that will help reduce emissions.
Teachers and youth workers can find out more and register for the `Shout about climate solutions' week of action and a FREE resource pack at www.foe.co.uk/learning/educators/shout_about.
