Edinburgh Rejects Opportunity for Congestion Charge

22 February 2005

Friends of the Earth Scotland and other members of the Get Edinburgh Moving group [1] today (Tuesday 22nd) expressed their disappointment at the 'no' vote in the Edinburgh road pricing referendum - and set out what now needs to happen to tackle pollution in the Scottish capital.

Duncan McLaren, Chief Executive of Friends of the Earth Scotland, said:

"It remains our belief that this was a workable and practical scheme that would have delivered many benefits for the people of Edinburgh. We are very disappointed that these proposals have been rejected along with over £750 million worth of public transport improvements.

"The success of London's congestion charging scheme is proof that such schemes can and do cut traffic and reduce pollution. We hope that this result does not dampen the enthusiasm in other cities to try to tackle rising traffic levels."
