Stansted airport public inquiry opens

30 May 2007

Friends of the Earth will attend the start of the Public Inquiry into BAA's expansion plans tomorrow (Wednesday, 30 May). Friends of the Earth will be presenting evidence at the Inquiry.

There will be a photo opportunity, organised by Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE), before the inquiry opens. Details of the Public Inquiry and photo opportunities can be found on the SCE press release:

Friends of the Earth's East of England Regional Campaigner, Mary Edwards, said:

"Aviation is already the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK. If airports like Stansted are allowed to expand it will make the situation worse and wreck the Government's climate change strategy. Ministers must wake up to the problem and abandon plans to allow a huge increase in air travel."

"We are pleased that the Government has agreed to introduce a climate change law. But the new legislation must include the UK's share of international aviation emissions and aim to cut carbon dioxide emissions by at least three per cent every year.

Notes

Friends of the Earth says that the Government's faith in incorporating Aviation into the European Trading Scheme as a `solution' to aviations' climate impact is ill placed. The environmental campaign group is also calling on the Government to include UK international aviation emissions in its proosals for a new law to tackle climate change. Friends of the Earth has led the call for a new climate change bill through The Big Ask climate campaign (www.thebigask.com)
