Lord Stern right to highlight carbon impact of food chain

27 October 2009

Reacting to Lord Stern's comments about the action needed to prevent runaway climate change, Friends of the Earth's senior food campaigner, Clare Oxborrow, said:

"The meat and dairy industry produces more greenhouse gas emissions than all the world's transport and its impact must be reduced if we are to prevent runaway climate change."

"Cutting down on meat is a win-win for healthier people and a healthier planet, but we also need the Government to make big changes to the way it's produced."

"Millions of pounds of taxpayers' money is spent propping up factory farms which use imported animal feed grown after forests are destroyed - Ministers must shift subsidies to help farmers produce home-grown animal feeds that don't trash forests.

"In the run-up to crucial UN climate talks this December, rich countries show real leadership - and fixing the food chain is an important part of this."
