Stop Climate Chaos to meet Blair, Brown, Beckett and Benn

27 February 2006

Stop Climate Chaos will urge the UK Government to take urgent and effective action on climate change when they meet with the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and an exceptional line-up of other cabinet ministers including the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, at 10am, Tuesday 28th February.

Stop Climate Chaos, the new climate change coalition, is meeting with the UK Government to discuss how to avoid climate chaos. The coalition is also meeting with the opposition parties.

The scientific evidence is now clear. The primary cause of climate change is the burning of fossil fuels and resultant carbon dioxide (and other greenhouse gas) emissions.

In the UK, we need the Government to immediately establish a Carbon Budget which delivers three per cent annual reduction in the emissions of carbon dioxide. This must set targets for carbon cuts across all sectors of the economy.

Internationally, the UK Government must do all it can to ensure that the global greenhouse emissions are falling irreversibly by 2015.

And, for poor countries, who'll be hit first and worst by climate change, it must deliver policies to help them cope with disasters caused by climate change and enable them to get access to clean energy to enable environmentally-sound growth.

The Secretary of State for the Environment, Margaret Beckett and the Secretary of State for International Development, Hilary Benn will also attend the meeting.

The public are increasingly passionate and concerned about this issue - which will be in evidence on March 1st when Stop Climate Chaos supporters `Carbon Date' MPs from all parties to tell them how strongly they feel, and ask them to take action. Leader of the Conservative Party, David Cameron, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Menzies Campbell and Margaret Beckett are all intending to attend.

Ashok Sinha, Stop Climate Chaos Director says:

"Stop Climate Chaos looks forward to meeting the Prime Minister and discussing with him the need for urgent and effective action on climate change. We want to see the UK Government leading the way to Stop Climate Chaos. Together, we can do it. We cannot afford to fail."
