Conservative's plan to introduce a supermarket watchdog
5 January 2010
In response to the Conservative's plans to introduce a supermarket watchdog, Helen Rimmer, food campaigner for Friends of the Earth said:
"A supermarket watchdog will give farmers and consumers a fairer deal - and will enable farmers to invest in greener farming - but in order to put a stop to their bully boy behaviour it must be independent rather than a part of the Office of Fair Trading, which has a history of failing to stand up to the supermarkets.
"The Labour Government is being left behind when it comes to food and farming - it has spent two years ignoring the advice of the Competition Commission and must urgently create a fair food chain for UK and overseas farmers, workers and consumers by backing a new law for a supermarket watchdog."
